A police officer challenging Arizona's new immigration law wants a judge to set a July 16 hearing to consider his request to block enforcement of the law.

Phoenix Officer David Salgado wants his request for a preliminary injunction heard before the law takes effect July 29.

The law requires officers, while enforcing other laws, to question a person's immigration status if there's a reasonable suspicion that he or she is in the country illegally.

Attorney General Terry Goddard's office declined to comment. The Attorney General usually defends state laws from challenges but it wasn't named in the officer's lawsuit,

The office of Gov. Jan Brewer is named in the officer's challenge. A call seeking comment wasn't immediately returned on Tuesday afternoon.
