Last decade, the Clinton administration added teeth to a little-known Health and Human Services Department regulation mandating that hospitals provide emergency treatment even to illegals.

Under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, or EMTALA, hospitals can't even ask for a patient's immigration status or ability to pay prior to delivering treatment. They also can't keep such uninsured patients waiting, even if their problem isn't an emergency. Nor can they discharge them until they're fully stabilized and have safe transportation.

More, hospitals must post EMTALA signs in Spanish and English. The law isn't limited to ERs. Hospitals must accept illegals at any facility on campus -- including outpatient clinics and doctor's offices -- located within 250 yards of the main buildings.

Hospitals end up treating uninsured illegals for the sniffles and other nonurgent care, and pass that exorbitant cost on to the insured, the Government Accountability Office has found. Resulting overcrowding leads to delays in "care for patients with true emergency needs."

This unfunded federal mandate has placed a heavy and unfair financial burden on more than 1,500 hospitals across the country, according to HHS data, costing billions in unpaid bills by some estimates.

President Obama said, "Health care is our deficit problem", but it appears that, through EMTALA, illegal immigration has become our "health care problem". Repeal the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and enforce the business sanctions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), both passed in 1986!

Of course he did. Rangel and some other stupid liars just cant hold it in. There is no health care crises. Big Union employers dont want to have to pay insurance to cover all the new illegal aliens they plan on hiring if amnesty is granted because it would cut into their profits. They might as hire Americans if they have to give illegal aliens benefits. Thats why Obama and the democrats dont do something reasonable to help Americans afford insurance, like tort reform or letting insurance companies sell accross state lines. The politicians would not get the payoffs that the SEIU, ACORN and other players would give them.

Maybe if you do your job and deport them, the cost will be gone all together Charlie!

Just like I told people on a liberal website today, all you have to do is go to an emergency room to PROVE that illegals get FREE healthcare, while I have to pay $600 for a broken leg. From the START they asked me how I was going to pay, while the 50+ illegals are there for the sniffles weren't asked the same question. I AM SICK OF THIS!! Why do people not want health care for Americans, while people like myself suffer? Thanks "christians" for your compassion!
