Immigration holds placed on 35,000 more SoCal inmates

Immigration holds placed on more SoCal inmates

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    11:31 a.m. November 6, 2008

LOS ANGELES – Federal immigration officials have flagged more than 35,000 inmates in Southern California for deportation during the last fiscal year, up 12 percent from a year earlier.
U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement says the increase stems from programs that have federal agents train sheriff's personnel in how to determine an inmate's immigration status. Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties all have such programs.

ICE said on Thursday that a seven-county area spanning much of Southern California accounted for roughly 17 percent of the 221,000 immigration holds placed on inmates across the country during the fiscal year that ended in September

The next time everyone in Southern California sees an I.C.E. Agent or a Sheriff's Deputy who works at a jail be sure to say, "THANKS".

This article doesn't say which 7 counties in southern California account for 17% of the 221,000 immigration holds place on inmates across the country in 2008 but you can bet it includes San Diego, Orange, Riverside and L.A. counties.

35,000 illegal alien inmates X $20,000/year to provide them three meals and color TV = $700 MILLION per year in prison costs.

The Justice Dept. put out a report a few years ago that it costs an average of $98,000 (in 2008 dollars) to process each criminal through the system. For those 35,000, that is only $3.4 BILLION.

And you can bet that there are probably far more than 35,000 illegal alien criminals in California jails.

For each of those 35,000 there is also the monetary impacts for the costs of the crime that finally put them in jail. How much is counseling costs for a rape victim? What is the economic loss for a murder victim? And on and on it goes.

Then there are the educations costs, medical coats, welfare costs...

Are there any questions on why California (and the nation) is going broke?

If the federal government had secured the border these criminals wouldn't have been able to get here and all of this crime and expense could have been avoided altogether.

I would assume that this is the larges number of immigration hold in any 7 county areas in the country.
