Lawmakers and clergy members traded biblical passages on Capitol Hill Wednesday at an immigration subcommittee hearing on the moral implications of comprehensive immigration reform.

Rev. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s ethics and religious liberty commission, quoted Matthew, Leviticus and Micah, passages which talked about the biblical mandate to care for “the least of these among us,’’ to care for the “strangersâ€

wards said mercy should be an individual act, not one compelled by the government.

“More than the welfare of illegal immigrants is at stake here,’’ Edwards said. “And the foremost obligation legally and morally, of the U.S. government is the welfare of American citizens.’’
