Obama won't send troops to Mexican border — for now

WASHINGTON - More federal agents and law enforcement equipment will be sent to hot spots along the Mexico-U.S. border with the aim of reducing violence in both countries, officials with Homeland Security and the Justice Department announced Tuesday.

The latest initiative, designed to help Mexico's President Felipe Calderon contain drug trafficking in his country and prevent a spillover of violence into U.S. border states, does not include the deployment of National Guard troops to the border despite a request from the governors of Texas and Arizona. President Barack Obama had said he'd be open to considering such requests, but emphasized that he didn't want to militarize the border region.

Secretary Janet Napolitano said Tuesday that the administration is still considering the request and said she plans to meet with Texas Gov. Rick Perry to discuss it.

The United States had earlier pledged $1.4 billion in crime fighting aid to Mexico through the three-year Merida Initiative.

The initiative was announced on the eve of the first visit to Mexico by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Calderon has dispatched more than 45,000 Mexican troops throughout the country, but drug cartel leaders have hit back with widespread kidnappings, murders and beheadings, bringing the drug-related death toll in Mexico since last year to 7,000. Meanwhile, U.S. law enforcement officials in some border towns have reported a surge of drug-related crimes.
