Clashes erupt with LAPD during evening immigrant rally at MacArthur Park

Police StateTuesday's protests were generally peaceful most of the day, but the calm was broken by run-ins between police and demonstrators during an evening rally in MacArthur Park. Just after 6 p.m., some of the few thousand participants still in the park started throwing plastic bottles and rocks at police, said Mike Lopez, spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Then, several dozen riot police, clad in helmets and carrying batons, started clearing the park, firing a few dozen volleys of rubber bullets into the crowd. No one appeared to be hit. ...Then, several dozen riot police, clad in helmets and carrying batons, started clearing the park, firing a few dozen volleys of rubber bullets into the crowd. No one appeared to be hit. A reporter saw at least three people struck by police batons.

Several marchers and police officers were injured, Lopez said, adding that arrests were made but it was not known how many.

A helicopter flew low over the east side of the park about 6:30 p.m. and sirens blasted as police ordered people out of the park, telling them they would be arrested if they didn't move out.

The police formed a riot line across the park on the east side, forcing the crowd to move west in a big mass. Some of the participants were yelling at police, "You can't do this."

About 6:45 p.m., police ordered the last people out of MacArthur Park, mostly news personnel and some marchers filming the police actions, declaring an "unlawful assembly..."

Also heard of a police officer that was hit and killed by a student who fell asleep while driving but can't find any news online about it yet. This incident was separate from the demonstrations today. Surely something will be reported about this soon. He was an experienced officer who left a wife and young children. Very sad. Heard Chief Bratton talk about it on the radio a couple hrs ago.

Why can't they do this? They are the police. Oh, wait, I forgot, that's right, they can't do that because you are illegal aliens and you THINK you have more rights than American citizens. This must be a truly upsetting moment for you right now, finding out that the laws WILL be enforced.

I saw the live report on it, didn't look to have anything to do with immigration. Just a kid on his way to school fell asleep at the wheel. Police are saying that alcohol was a factor in this thus why he was charged with a DUI and Manslaughter.

I saw that yesterday, but can't remember where. Said drugs or alcohol was involved.

It all boils down to Lack of Respect for the Rules! Safety is a Rule and Guide to living peacefully! Where was the Safety in the decision to end the March in an unsafe place? The Permit to "march or parade" has a set time limit on it for the purpose of SAFETY! The helicopter was flying over to insure Safety! When the Rally organizers refrained from issuing a peaceful end in ceremonies then the LAPD commanders were called in by the Shift commanders to assist in the enforcement of the Permit rule and guidelines. These commanders also knew the area was a troubled portion of their beat. Riot gear is only issued when a peacable solution has been tried and Safety has been twarted,i.e. an officer is injured by thrown bottles or rocks. Note; officers not in riot gear are still citizens. Once the riot gear is on the Safety of the lawabiding is the priority of each team. I find it interesting that the Chief does not find his officers more important than criminals in this issue and only seek to punish those that abused their official police powers,e.g. beating on the photojournalist that did not have visible proof of Press Safepassage yet would not leave the park but goaded officers in riot gear to take someone into submission for incarceration. Oh,by the way, Kicking and scratching is considered Resistance of Arrest not self-defense. I had the pleasure of Riot Control training and the officers were properly used.
