Mexico advises US Ninth Circuit on SB 1070

Mexico presented a petition before the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco in support of the judgement blocking portions of the controversial Arizona law SB 1070. In the petition presented as Friend of the Court, Mexico argues that the Arizona law entails risk of harassment and persecution to Mexican citizens by police agents in Arizona. Mexico seeks to assure that its citizens in the US receive human and civil rights guaranteed by the US Constitution. In addition, the petition holds that SB 1070 interferes in international affairs by hindering bilateral relations and collaboration between Mexico and the US. The petition also advises that the law will severely damage commerce and tourism between Arizona and Mexico and derail efforts toward an immigration reform.

In a coordinated action, 10 Latin American countries also solicited permission of the Court to join Mexico's petition to ratify the temporary suspension of those parts of the law imposed by the Federal Judge. Those countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Chile.
