As FSM readers know, we are in the midst of publishing a multi-part series on the horrors of illegal immigration. Now, FSM Contributing Editor Cinnamon Stillwell offers her thoughts and ideas about why a hodgepodge of our political leaders, corporate America, big unions and other strange bedfellows are allowing America’s sovereignty to be so badly weakened. Read it and weep.

America’s Border War

Cinnamon Stillwell

As America debates what direction to take in the war in Iraq, another war is raging on its southern border.

Last week, gunman from the Mexican side of the Arizona border attacked unarmed U.S. National Guard troops manning an observation post. Unable to defend themselves or to apprehend illegal border crossers due to onerous restrictions placed on their activity, the troops retreated and the gunmen escaped back into Mexico.

If this isn’t an act of war, it’s hard to imagine what is.

Furthermore, it’s not the first time that something like this has happened. U.S. Border Patrol agents, as well as civilians caught in the crossfire, have found themselves under attack by armed members of Mexican drug cartels, gangs, human traffickers and the Mexican military itself on a number of occasions. This conflict has been escalating for some time now and as this latest skirmish suggests, there is no end in sight.

Whether it be illegal immigration, human trafficking, drug smuggling, gang activity or the outright aggression from its “neighbor” to the south, American sovereignty is clearly under attack. For a nation that cannot control its borders will not long remain a nation. The problem is, much of our own government, mainstream media and elite are aiding and abetting the enemy. A strange confluence of big business, labor unions, leftist groups, Hispanic nationalists, Republicans and Democrats alike are working to make the type of polyglot society envisioned in the dystopian film “Blade Runner” a reality in the not-so-distant future. America the beautiful is destined to become America the transnational hub for cheap labor, goods and services.

At the top of the list of abettors is the Bush administration, which, while continuing a trend long in the making, has done more to advance the loss of American sovereignty than any before. President Bush’s repeated promises of amnesty by any other name have been paramount to rolling out the welcome mat to Mexico’s population. Each time one of these speeches occurs, activity on the border increases tenfold and one can guess in which direction. Bush’s transparent unwillingness to reinforce border security while simultaneously dismissing American volunteer border patrol groups such as the Minuteman Project and Minuteman Civil Defense Corps as “vigilantes” has only strengthened this message. Ironically, it is Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers, not the federal government, who have been assistingU.S. National Guard troops in the wake of the recent border attack.

When it comes to Homeland Security, particularly since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the Bush administration had done little in the way of border enforcement to inspire confidence. It is telling that the day of the border attack, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff gave a press conference and made no mention of the incident. For to do so would be to demonstrate that national security cannot just be fought on frontlines abroad, but must also be fought on the home front.

But such oversight is not an accident. A 2005 Council on Foreign Relations document spells out a five-year plan to forge a North American Union in which America, Canada and Mexico form an entity similar to the European Union. Titled “Building a North American Community,” the document’s recommendations were allegedly adopted during a 2003 meeting at Bush’s Texas ranch by the President, then Mexican President Vicente Fox and then Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. Since that time, collusion between the three governments in pursuit of this goal has continued under the watchful eyeof the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America.

While there are those who label such observations the fanciful wanderings of conspiratorial minds, the evidence is out there for anyone willing to look. One outcome foreseen by the plan for a North American Union – a shared currency called the “Amero” – seems already to be in the works. This week’s news that the heavily Hispanic customer base of the Dallas-based Pizza Patrón chain will now be able to make purchases using Mexican pesos was prescient in this regard. Seeing as American dollars have long been more valuable in Mexico than pesos, the ascendance of the “Amero” may just be a matter of time.

Now that the Democrats have gained a majority in the House and a slim majority in the Senate (if you count the apparently comatose Democratic Senator Tim Johnson), there is much talk about the possibility of a “comprehensive” immigration bill being signed in the next year. Of course, “comprehensive” is just a buzzword to describe a toothless bill that will provide amnesty, avoid building a border fence and actually increase illegal (and possibly legal) immigration. This is exactly the type of bill President Bush has been trying to pass since he came into office, but has been prevented from doing so by the obstructionism of the former Republican House majority.

But passage of such a bill today seems imminent. Despite the fact that a fair amount of the conservative leaning “Blue Dog Democrats” elected in 2006 are pro-border enforcement, the Democrat Party leadership is dominated by pro-open borders liberals. More interested in pandering to voters by pushing identity politics and chipping away at American power by any means necessary, such Democrats will likely prove willing players in the effort to erase the country’s borders. And President Bush knows it. Indeed, he told House of Representatives Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer, “You know, I think I'm going to have a lot easier time dealing with you on immigration than I had dealing with the House Republican leadership on immigration.”

Clearly, there are both Republicans and Democrats that have put the needs of transnational corporations and ideologues above those of the people they were elected to serve. It’s now up to those few politicians of both parties devoted to retaining American sovereignty to help stem the tide.

The American people, who, through poll after poll, have demonstrated their opposition to the direction being taken by the government on border enforcement and illegal immigration, can help by continuing to make their will known. Particularly legal immigrants, whose voices are crucial to combating the attempts by the open borders lobby to frame the issue in racial terms.

As for the war on America’s southern border, it will have to be fought one way or another. If the government allows the current chaos to continue, it will be left to the people to pick up the pieces.
