Amnesty calamities

Dimitri Vassilaros disclosed that the Senate immigration bill of May 2006 would alter established law to permit free legal services to illegal aliens ("A new entitlement for illegals," Dec. 25 and PghTrib.com).

This would assist about 10 million illegal aliens and 4 million to 5 million family members to eventually naturalize and then bring in parents and many other relatives. This is the worker amnesty.

Subsection 601(b) of the bill would exempt employers from all civil and criminal tax liabilities arising from their employment of illegal aliens just as soon as these aliens apply for the amnesty path. No period of exemption is specified. This is the employer amnesty.

These are very significant detractions.

But the true calamity is that this bill, by expanding kinship privilege and creating new channels of labor import, would also increase legal immigration from its current 1 million a year to 2.5 million. There is little assurance that illegal entry would decline. About 60 million could be added to our population in the next 20 years, with high potential for environmental degradation and societal stress.
