YORK, Pa. -- Has the Mexican mafia infiltrated the streets of York?

This has been on the minds of many people since an e-mail started circulating a few days ago.

It all started during a recent intelligence briefing with York law enforcement officials. During this meeting, an investigation involving the Mexican mafia was discussed.

One law enforcement official then e-mailed the warning to people in the York community.

The top brass at the York Police Department said some of the information was wrong, incomplete and blown out of proportion.

According to the e-mail, the Mexican mafia has moved into the Queen Street area of York on the city's east side.

The e-mail goes on to say gang members have marked their turf between the baseball stadium and Springettsbury Avenue.

Police acknowledged they are looking at the possibility of the Mexican mafia's involvement in the city. However, they said it is not clear if they are really here, or of it is just criminals claiming to be with the Mexican mafia.

"There has never been a case where we have been able to discover an identified member of the Mexican mafia group that has attacked an innocent civilian," said Capt. Wes Kahley.

The e-mail about the Mexican mafia has York's top officers at city hall fielding a lot of calls from concerned citizens.

Police said there is no need to be afraid, but meanwhile will continue their investigation.
