IMPERIAL BEACH – A surfer was apparently trying to catch more than a wave near the U.S.-Mexico border after he was taken into custody on suspicion of smuggling marijuana, according to the Border Patrol.

About 6 a.m. Sunday, agents at the southern end of Imperial Beach spotted the 30-year-old man paddling north on a surfboard from Mexico with a blue duffel bag in tow. The surfer released the bag and was then summoned ashore by agents, who had to pull him from the water when he refused to get out, agents said.

The Mexican citizen admitted he entered the country illegally, agents said. The bag was eventually brought to shore by the tides and agents said they found five packages of marijuana weighing nearly 25 pounds.
The drug has a street value of about $75,000.
