Mexicans keeping eye on American primaries
Many say they hope for Dem victory

MEXICO CITY - Marco Antonio Camacho claims not to know much about politics. But when it comes to the U.S. presidential primaries, the Mexico City potato chip vendor knows whom he likes.

"Hillary Clinton, definitely," Camacho said. "Her husband was a great president to Mexicans. But I also like the Black guy: A minority president would really help your image down here."

After eight years of often-strained Mexican-U.S. relations, Mexicans like Camacho are keeping close tabs on the U.S. presidential race. Mexican television offers near-daily updates on the candidates, Mexican analysts are blogging vigorously about the primaries, and many regular Mexicans can rattle off the names of the top contenders.

One national newspaper, El Universal, has an entire section of its Web site dedicated to the primaries. One article aims to explain the baffling U.S. party symbols: "Are the Democrats really burros? Are Republicans big and heavy?" it says.

"The interest is a recognition that this process affects (Mexicans)," said Diego Beas, a political columnist for the Reforma newspaper. "People in Mexico have a stake in these primary elections."

Surveys show George W. Bush is deeply unpopular in Mexico, where many people associate him with the Iraq war, increased border security and new laws against illegal immigration. Many people here say they are hoping for a Democratic victory in November.

"If they're from the same party as Bush, they're bound to be bad for Mexico," said Gerardo Conde, a 42-year-old actuary.

Hairdresser MarÃ*a Dolores Muciño said she is a Clinton supporter because she liked Bill Clinton. In Mexico, former president Clinton is remembered fondly for helping bail out the Mexican economy after a 1994 economic collapse. His presidency also coincided with the launch of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, which has boosted Mexico's economy.

"Clinton seemed very open toward Mexico; he didn't judge us," Muciño said as she applied a set of fake eyelashes to customer Montserrat Silva. "I'm hoping Hillary would be the same way."

Despite his leading role in efforts to reform U.S. immigration laws, a key issue for Mexico, John McCain is little-known in Mexico. Mitt Romney, too, is an unfamiliar name.

Barack Obama, however, has inspired much curiosity.

"That would really be something, to see an American president who was a Black man," said Silva, a 43-year-old philosophy professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. "But I don't think the establishment will allow it. I don't think he'll be able to win the vote."

Correct me if I am wrong, I thought NAFTA was the reason that Mexicans started coming here in droves because it crippled their economy and they could not find employment that paid a living wage. What are we to believe now? Looking for an answer.

This is how uneducated the populace of this third world country actually is.

If it were up to jorge bush, every mexican living in the United States illegally would have had amnesty. jorge bush has refused to secure our borders so that perhaps 15-20 million illegals have been able to enter this country in violation of US Law.

jorge bush is the best friend mexico has ever had and these pople cannot see that. Goes to show you these people really have no clue.

Oh, and why should mexico even care about the war in Iraq. What sacrafices has mexico made to aid the United States in this war? You would think that as a good will gesture, they could send a few thousand troops to Iraq to show a support of solidarity with us.

But no, mexico continues to make demands on the US and is willing to give absolutely nothing in return. mexico cares about mexico and nothing else.

    Disgusting

Mexico did not support the war and in fact went behind America's back to negociate a deal with Saddam for prisoner release of those with Mexican citizenship and accused the US of using Mexican's to fight the war.

Mexico is not a friend of the United States.

There is much going on in Mexico regarding the Iraq war, almost all of it ignored in the U.S. media. An update for VDARE.COM readers:

    THE CANNON FODDER ARGUMENT
The Mexican media has presented the U.S. prosecution of the Iraq war in the worst light possible, continually impugning U.S. motives and military practice.

A favorite theme: the cannon fodder argument – that the U.S. is utilizing Mexicans to fight in Iraq.

This perception is reinforced in several ways. When Mexican journalists visit U.S. military camps and vessels, they seek out Spanish-speaking service members to interview. And the Mexican media publicizes (and keeps a running count of) all Mexican-origin soldiers who die in the war.

Then there’s TV Azteca’s Ramon Fregoso, a white Mexican journalist who is serving as anchor man while the regular anchor, Javier Alatorre, broadcasts from the Middle East.

Fregoso recently informed his audience that the U.S. military was still recruiting new soldiers – and guess who recruitment efforts are directed at? Viewers were then treated to a replay of a U.S. Army recruiting commercial - in Spanish. When the commercial ended, Fregoso smugly commented: “Van por los mexicanosâ€
