DE: Traffic, ID charges for man deported 3 times

Traffic, ID charges for man deported 3 times
    The News Journal

New Castle County Police have charged a man with felony forgery and related offenses after he provided police with a false identity.

Jorge Mejias, 30, who lives in the first block of S. Broom St. in Wilmington, was later discovered to be a three-time deported felon who once again illegally entered the United States from the Dominican Republic.

On July 1, officers received information regarding a man delivering cocaine to a residence in the community of Rambleton Acres near New Castle. The officers set up a perimeter of the delivery location and observed Mejias enter the area in a vehicle. He suddenly began driving in an aggressive manner on the shoulder of the roadway but was stopped by officers near the community, police said.

Officers found Mejias in possession of several hundred dollars but no drugs. Based on the original investigation, police seized the cash and his Chevrolet Malibu. Mejias originally provided a Delaware identification card with the name Hector Rivera and a birth certificate from Puerto Rico. He was issued a number of traffic violations and released.

The arresting officers later received information from the Wilmington Police Department regarding Mejias' true identity. County officers confirmed his identity though a previous mugshot photograph. On Friday, the officers were able to contact Mejias and convince him to pick up his vehicle at police headquarters.

When he responded to headquarters, he was immediately arrested and charged with criminal impersonation, two counts of felony forgery, and possession of a fictitious license. He was arraigned and committed to the Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $14,000 secured bail.

Officers also contacted an Immigration, Customs and Enforcement Agent who issued a federal detainer for Mejias. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years of a federal jail time.
