President Bush said today that the military will reduce
soldiers’ deployments in Iraq to 12 months from 15. But even as
he praised security progress, he said that troop levels should
remain essentially unchanged for the remainder of his
presidency. We’ll have the full story. Plus:

* Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has asked the
Department of Homeland Security to stop enforcing the law
against employers of illegal immigrants because of the negative
effect enforcement could have on the city’s economy. The mayor
also supports a rule preventing L.A. police officers from
questioning suspects about their immigration status – this less
than a week after a young football star was murdered by an
illegal alien gang member.

* Members of Congress are fighting to deport thousands of
criminal illegal aliens, but some countries are not willing to
accept these criminals back. In the last two months, eight
countries have refused to take back more than 139,000 illegal
aliens that have committed crimes in this country.

* Florida residents will soon be allowed to bring loaded guns
to the workplace. The legislation has divided state residents –
with one group siding with the second amendment right to bear
arms, and others believing the legislation would only put
people at an unnecessary risk and lead to more violent
incidents in the workplace.

* Mexico relies heavily on its military to carry out police
functions such as fighting drug cartels. But a United Nations
report, requested by former President Vicente Fox before he
left office, says that Mexico should do just the opposite and
keep its military out the country’s justice system. The U.N.
concluded that Mexico’s use of its military is “dangerous in
the long term.â€
