A Nogales, Sonora, man was sentenced Thursday to 21 months in federal prison for trying to smuggle an 11-month-old boy across the border from Mexico, officials said.
According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Jose Adan Lopez-Perez, 35, tried to enter the United States on March 10 with a boy he said was his son.
Lopez-Perez later told U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials that he did not know the child and had been offered $100 by an unknown woman to take him to a store in Nogales, Ariz., the release said.
Lopez-Perez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport an illegal immigrant for profit on May 28, the release said.
