LA JOYA -- Three Mexican nationals were arrested Thursday morning after a high-speed police chase.

The pursuit started about 4:30 a.m. at the 800 block of East U.S. Highway 83 in La Joya, said Officer Joe Cantu, a La Joya police spokesman.

Police said the driver of a green 1993 Ford Crown Victoria was following another car too closely along the highway. When the La Joya patrol officer attempted to pull over the car, it took off, Cantu said.

Officers spotted the suspicious , which then took off toward the east on the expressway at speeds up to 110 mph, Cantu said.

The chase turned south at Goodwin Road, where everyone inside the Ford bailed out into the farmland south of where the road ends, about 3 miles south of Old U.S. Highway 83 near Peñitas.

Three undocumented Mexican women from Chiapas state were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents. Police believe two or three others inside the vehicle who managed to evade the authorities.

Officers from the Palmview and Peñitas police departments also assisted with Thursday morning's pursuit.
