Federal judge weighs challenge to AZ voter ID law

PHOENIX (AP) -- A federal judge is weighing a challenge to Arizona requirements for voter identification and proof of citizenship for registering to vote.

U.S. District Roslyn Silver has the case under advisement following a six-day trial that ended Friday in Phoenix.

At issue are combined 2006 lawsuits challenging requirements mandated when voters approved Proposition 200 on the state's 2004 general election ballot.

The law requires voters to produce specified types of ID when casting ballots at polling places and to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote either for the first time or in a different county.

The sides differ on whether an April ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding an Indiana law effectively decides the Arizona case.
