Georgia Law Cuts Free ESL Courses for Immigrants

Georgia Law Cuts Free ESL Courses for Immigrants

Atlanta Latino, Judith MartÃ*nez, Posted: Dec 20, 2009 Review it on NewsTrust

A new state law aimed at denying English language education to undocumented immigrants in Georgia will impact hundreds of students, reports the Atlanta Latino. HB2 will take effect on January 1 and will require higher education institutions to inquire about the immigration status of prospective students for English as a Second Language (ESL) and the GED diploma.

Undocumented students would be able to attend the classes if they pay. The Atlanta Latino reported there were 100,000 students enrolled in higher education institutions in 2009. Over 20,000 attended ESL classes that year.

They're not being denied, they're being asked to pay for services received - just like an American.

GREAT! If they want these services they can pay for it themselves. The American tax payer is sick of footing the bill for this garbage!!

I wish they'd do that here! Arnie says more painful cuts coming for CA - I wonder if they will implement something like this?? Doubt it.

Why aren't organizations like laraza, maldef, lulac, et al., volunteering to teach them for free? They're advocates aren't they? They're there to help aren't they?

Silly me! There's no $$$$$$ in it for them.
