DESERT CENTER -- In what the U.S. Border Patrol is calling a major heat related incident, several emergency agencies are heading to a desolate area of the desert off Interstate 10 to help a group of people needing help.
Border Patrol tells News Channel 3 a group of eight undocumented immigrants was found wandering in the desert, dehydrated, and lost. All were treated on the scene by medical personnel; two of them were airlifted to JFK Hospital in Indio for further treatment.
Cal Fire says the group had been in the desert for three days in scorching heat. Temperatures reached 109-degrees in the Palm Springs area over the weekend, which is just 50 miles to the northwest.
Border Patrol says they had set up a search-and-rescue effort to make sure there was no one else stranded in today's heat. They couldn't find anyone.
The immigrants who were found will be processed by U.S. Border Patrol and likely sent back to Mexico.
