CHANNEL 5 NEWS (KRGV, 2010) PHARR - They're children that could easily end up in the hands of the cartels or as human trafficking victims. But they're safe, all because some winter Texans donated their time and money to keep a shelter open.
"They do everything from cleaning, baking cookies, working the thrift store, clerical jobs," says Betsy Chacon.
Chacon says if it wasn't for the winter Texans, the organization would not exist.
She's the director of Children's Haven International. It's a facility in Reynosa that houses 58 children full time.
She says many of the children were physically or sexually abused and abandoned by their parents.
Now, she's having a hard time getting the volunteers to cross into Mexico to work with the charity.
"Some of our faithful people who've been supporting this ministry for 15-20 years have already said they won't be going this year," says Chacon.
Chacon and the winter Texans say they're praying for another way to make ends meet.
