Immigration Reform Rally Draws Thousands

CHICAGO, Ill. (AP) -- About a thousand supporters of immigration reform are rallying today in Chicago's Federal Plaza.

The day marks the anniversary of the first of several marches held in Chicago that triggered a national movement seeking rights for undocumented workers.

Today's rally kicks off 50 days of prayer vigils, rallies and marches aimed at urging federal lawmakers to act. Demonstrators want Congress to open the door to citizenship to undocumented workers.

Organizer Jorge Mujica says about 70 groups are participating in the effort. The groups include leaders from various ethnic groups who first came to the United States as immigrants.

The push will culminate in a march on May 1 in downtown Chicago.
