ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Action 7 News is learning more about the man accused of sexually assaulting and killing a 1-month-old girl.

Detectives said Juan Galindo’s criminal history includes drugs, alcohol and assault on another child.

Guards surrounded Galindo during his court appearance over the weekend to protect him from being attacked by other inmates, detectives said. He’s accused of sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend’s four-week-old girl. His bond was set at $1 million.

Police said the baby girl suffered from anal and vaginal tears and they found her lying in a pool of blood.

“It's extremely hard on the detectives and everybody who, the initial deputies who attempted to do CPR on the baby, the family members who attempted to do CPR on the baby. It's extremely difficult for anybody involved,” Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Lt. Justin Dunlap said.

Galindo is an illegal immigrant who has used several aliases and birth dates. Detectives also said he has six children with different women and he’s put a child in danger before.

“He has been arrested for a case involving child abuse before in Texas, I believe in 1993, for some sort of DWI related incident,” Dunlap said. Galindo sneaked back into the country after being deported in August.

Detectives said each charge he faces carries a life sentence. Immigration officials said Galindo may face 20 years in prison for reentering the country illegally.
