14 illegal immigrants taken into custody

March 4, 2008

State police discovered 14 illegal immigrants during a traffic stop Monday in Marion Township, according to a police report. At 2:05 p.m., police stopped an eastbound van near mile marker No. 170 on Interstate 80. The driver had committed traffic violations.

Police said the driver did not appear to have a driver’s license, vehicle registration or insurance. No one in the van could speak English or show proper identification, according to the police report.

Authorities escorted the van to the Rockview barracks. During the drive there, one of the travelers fled into the forest along the highway, police said.

He was later found and taken into custody.

Federal immigration officials investigated and found that each person in the van was an illegal immigrant from Mexico, police said. All were detained in the Clinton County jail and await deportation proceedings.
