Mexico advisory group seeks 3 S.A. members
Elaine Ayala - Express-News

The Instituto de Mexicanos en el Exterior is accepting applications for three San Antonio positions on its 100-member Consejo Consultivo, a group that advises Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on issues facing Mexican nationals living in the United States and Canada.

The group has access to the highest levels of the Mexican government, meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderón, members of the Mexican congress and its secretaries of state twice a year, says Dr. M. Antonieta Gonzalez, a San Antonio pediatrician currently serving on the group.

Former San Antonio members include Emilio España, Roberto Rosas, Maria Elena Torralva-Alonso, former state Sen. Carlos Truan, Adriana Arzac and Dora Hidalgo.

Consejero positions are open to San Antonians who are native-born Mexican nationals, naturalized Mexicans or U.S. citizens of Mexican descent. Applicants must speak Spanish.

Applications are available on its Web site, www.candidatosccimesatx.com or at the Mexican Consulate, 127 Navarro St.; La Prensa, 318 S. Flores St.; Mi Tierra restaurant at Market Square; Fuerza Unida, 710 New Laredo Hwy.; and UTSA's Mexico Center, 301 S. Frio St., in the Monterey Building of the downtown campus.

Completed applications must be returned to Emilio España, 11765 West Ave., Suite 290, San Antonio, TX 78216.

Deadline is Aug. 29.

A selection committee representing groups such as MATT.org, the Free Trade Alliance, the Federation of Mexican Communities, Fuerza Unida and UTSA's Mexico Center will select the three newconsejeros.

In another project, the San Antonio members are working to identify agencies, churches and groups — both formal and informal — that aid Mexican nationals in San Antonio and Mexico.
