IRVING, Texas -- Supporters of Irving's policy on illegal immigrants rallied on behalf of the crackdown at city hall Saturday.
The effort, called the Pro-American Rally, was organized to counter a demonstration last week that protested the city's practice of sharing jail inmate information with federal immigration agents.
People at the rally said they aren't against all immigrants, but object to those in the country illegally. Jean Towell, president of Citizens for Immigration Reform, said the United States' illegal immigrants include people from Asia, Canada and Ireland.
"So we are against any of those who are in this country illegally," she said. "Come to this country legally, and we welcome you," she said.
Last year, Irving police began checking the residency status of people arrested on other charges. More than 1,700 people have been deported since the city started the program.

We've been driving over there to do our shopping and always stop to thank the local law enforcement when we see them.
It has some VERY nice shopping areas, though I was saddened to see employment opportunity signs in spanish only posted at the Target we walked right back out of.I don't care who you are, how you got here, what color you are, what language/dialect you speak... If you didn't get here legally then you don't belong here. Period.
