A 22-year-old illegal Mexican immigrant was arrested on April 19 in connection to the death of a 22-year-old Junction City man found fatally injured on the shoulder of K-18 in Geary County in late December 2006.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers arrested Miguel Mosso-Cantu in Salina following a lengthy investigation involving KHP troopers and members of the Geary County Police Department.

"This was good police work," said Lt. Gregory Harkrader of the KHP. "We had been looking for this car... our troopers never gave up. I'm very proud of them."

Jovonne P. Payne, 22, of Junction City, was found injured on the shoulder of K-18, about four miles north of I-70, at about 11:15 p.m. on December 20. He was taken to Geary County Community Hospital, where he died early the next morning. Harkerader said in December the injuries were the result of a hit-and-run, and the investigation turned up some clues as to what kind of car was involved with the accident.

KHP Trooper Will Baquero was credited with much of the investigation leading to the arrest of Mosso-Cantu.
According to Harkrader, Baquero was responsible for a traffic stop of the suspect's vehicle that resulted in the eventual arrest.

Mosso-Cantu was arrested for vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an injury accident, failure to report an accident and other charges.
He is being held in the Geary County Jail in Junction City on $50,000 bond. Harkrader said Mosso-Cantu is also being held for immigration officials.
