CT-Immigrant family sues bakery over working conditions

Immigrant family sues bakery over working conditions

New Haven (AP) _ A family of Ecuadorean immigrants has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the owners of a New Haven bakery shop where they worked of sexually and verbally abusing them for years. They also allege the owners refused to pay the minimum wage or overtime and threatened to deport them if they complained.

The unusual lawsuit by undocumented immigrants was filed earlier this month under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

Olger Nestor Urena Flores and members of his family are making the allegations against Antonio DiBenedetto and his wife, Anna, who own Rocco's Bakery in New Haven and a bread-making factory in Meriden.

A telephone message was left Tuesday for the DiBenedettos' lawyer, Hugh Keefe.

The lawsuit seeks damages for back wages and for suffering and emotional distress.

There needs to be a federal law stating that illegals cannot sue us. Period. This is insane. Unfortunately there is no law to prevent them from doing so.

This could be yhe start of punishment for employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, this could be good.

You two are right. The employers are getting what they deserve.

I was thinking more of a case around here involving an illegal who was killed by an off duty cop. His family sued the city and was awarded a couple of million dollars, maybe more. That's the sort of suit that should not be allowed.

I agree. The police should sue the company the illegal worked for to get their million back. LOL

Serves these employers right. Hope they win and this bakery goes out of business.
