    Mexicans "breathe free" in Windsor

(Maybe we could print fliers with this article and hand them out at day labor centers.)

    Mexicans "breathe free" in Windsor

While many of the recent Mexican arrivals from Florida have little understanding of their status, some of those who spoke to The Star are convinced their situation has got to be better in Canada.

Carina Gonzalez, 26, who arrived at the Detroit-Windsor border from Naples, Fla. by car Sept. 4, along with her husband, two daughters and accompanied by three other families in their cars, said in an interview that when she stepped out of Canadian immigration offices after an 11-hour wait: "I could finely breathe free."

She said, since arriving, it has been the most relaxed and welcomed she has felt in the 10 years since she literally "ran" the U.S. border in Arizona as a frightened 16-year-old girl.

"Canada feels totally different," she said in lightly accented English, learned on various temporary jobs throughout the southern U.S. "I feel free. I don't feel like I'm being chased. I feel thankful for the help I get. Everywhere I go people want to help us. Never got that feeling before (in the U.S.)"

She said she has already begun the legal process of applying as a refugee and, while uncertain what that may involve, she is ready to proceed with her application, hoping to eventually obtain legal status in Canada, find a job, get a home and enroll her children in school.

She said her husband, who took jobs as an itinerant day labourer and construction worker in Florida, also expects to find work soon. Her 17-year-old brother-in-law, Rudulpho Munoz, said his main ambition, after being forced to work in Florida for $8 an hour on day jobs in construction virtually since adolescence, is to go back to school.

Because the only sure way to survive as an illegal immigrant in the U.S. is to work, Gonzalez said she is used to hustling for employment and is willing, and able to begin work as soon as possible. She suggested she might even be able to find employment as an interpreter for others she is sure are coming behind her from Florida.

I wonder how long before illegals will be marching in the streets while waving Mexican flags and calling Canadians racists?

I wouldn't want to help the mexican illegal alien invasion into Canada grow any larger than it already is so I would disagree with any flyers like you mentioned. The Canadians are our friends and it would be wrong to do this to them.

mexicans are not political refugees. And the Canadian government is already getting angry over them claiming they are. They are simply illegal immigrants looking to make more money than they would in mexico.

It's one group in florida that's really encouraging this, and once they are stopped and the illegals realize they aren't getting amnesty in Canada they'll stop trying.

IF ANYONE DESERVES PROTECTION IT'S ENGLISH SPEAKING LEGAL US CITIZENS WHO OPPOSE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. WE'RE THE ONES WHO ARE TRULY IN DANGER.

I'd like to feel free again from the invasion. I'd like to be able to walk down the street without illegals all over the places and seeing the evidence of their ravaging of our country.

Actually, I would not wish illegal immigrants on anyone but their own country. Not to mention I don't think that Canada will be a receptive as our foolish government.

I don't see how she could be a refugee - what from?

Wanting to make more money is not an acceptable for refugee status.

We have to make sure Canadians understand what is going on.

Canada is safe, we have a safe third country agreement.

If the illegal mexicans cross over to Canada from the US, Canada sends them back to the US. Aren't we lucky we get the coming and going..... and have to foot all the bills each way! AND THEY DON'T BELONG TO US

I posted about this in another thread. These folks are evidently being fed all kinds of misinformation which is compelling them to go there.

One of the things they are being told is that all they need to do is claim that they are fleeing from "persecution" by our government, or that they are in fear of their lives at the hands of our government, "enforcement squads", racist hate groups, and American citizens in general......all because of their race.

The "enforcement squads" and "racist hate groups" are, presumably, ICE and those opposed to illegal immigration

What caused the reporting, was of course the Mexicans fleeing the USA, but it may not be them using the USA for the fleeing, I remember reading on some site, some Mexicans saying that they are "workers and workers are border free" that is a line from the North American Security and Prosperity agreement. That's also why Mexican trucks are running in the USA. Right now limited to the USA, but the goal is from Mexico to Canada.

Mexico must be telling its citizens this is just about a done deal, "The North American Union" so to speak. Why else would a uneducated, poor worker sneaking into the country be spouting that? We are the only ones "left in the dark". President Bush is trying to say we are "reading" things wrongly, but the Canadians are protesting up there about this very issue, they don't want it. So its being discussed there as well. I think we need to find out more information on this than the "official" statements. Since so many are in the dark about this agreement. But not the Canadians nor the Mexicans......just Americans..which under such an agreement has more to lose than both countries.......Canada is not poor like Mexico, but it has more socialist leanings, and Mexico, what does she offer? Us paying its bills.....not to our advantage, but definitely can see where its an advantage to both those countries, primarily Mexico.

    NAFTA....remember that agreement?

I'm sure Canada feels totally different, wait until she wakes up to three feet of snow and it's twenty below it will be VERY different.
There's very little construction work in the winter but I suppose they can make some money shoveling snow from walkways.
