UAE to get tough on illegal immigration after amnesty

Not the U.S., but an interesting article. If only we could grow a spine like this. Of course, we don't need another amnesty.

UAE to get tough on illegal immigration after amnesty

Dubai, Aug 1 (IANS) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government will jail employers and impose a heavy fine if they continue to recruit or shelter illegal immigrant workers once the three-month amnesty period ends in September. The illegal immigrant will face deportation and a permanent ban on re-entry.

Obaid Rashid Al Zahmi, assistant under-secretary in the ministry of labour said Tuesday that if employers are found guilty they will be slapped with a fine of dirham 100,000 ($27,000) and two months in jail.

In June, the UAE cabinet had announced a three-month grace period for foreigners present illegally in the country to regularise their status according to the law or leave the country without penalty.

'All illegal expat workers caught after the amnesty period ends will be referred to the police for necessary action,' Al Zahmi was quoted as saying by the Khaleej Times.

The Indian consulate here has received more than 33,000 applications for emergency certificates from Indian workers wanting to use the special amnesty scheme.

There are around 1.4 million expatriate Indians in the UAE, many of them contract workers. In Dubai alone, Indians comprise over 60 percent of the city's total population of over 1.4 million.

Uh-oh, now we'll have more Indians apply for visas to the United States! Worse, we'll probably continue to exceed the H-1B visa cap to accomodate them and big business.

Anyone know what percentage of Indians become illegals in the United States by overstaying their visas?
