High-Profile Inmate Expected To Be Released From Columbiana County Prison
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 – updated: 7:39 am EST February 17, 2009
COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio -- An El Paso, Texas border patrol agent who has been jail for an unwarranted shooting in 2005 could be released from prison Tuesday, despite an 11-year center.
Jose Compean is one of two people jailed in connection with the shooting that prosecutors said the two agents tried to cover up. While the second agent, Ignacio Ramos, awaits release in Phoenix Tuesday, Compean could also be released Tuesday from a federal prison in Elkton, Columbiana County.
The case again Compean made national news when he was convicted and sentenced to 11-years behind bars after shooting an illegal immigrant drug runner in 2005. Supporters claimed his imprisonment was unjust.
Compean is scheduled to be released early because of a presidential commutation from former president George W. Bush. Compean was the last man to receive the commutation before Bush left office.
Both agents are from El Paso, Texas.
