SUMAS - While it surely didn't smell nice, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Sumas found $6 million worth of marijuana inside a cattle trailer bound for Stanwood Tuesday, Feb. 17.

When a Canadian man drove the trailer to the U.S.-Canada border crossing in Sumas, officers elected to search the vehicle, Customs and Border Protection Chief Tom Schreiber said.

After unloading the cattle, officers scanned the trailer and found hidden compartments between the trailer's upper and lower floors.

Officers scraped cow manure from the floor and opened up hidden panels, uncovering hundreds of bags of marijuana, Schreiber said.

The bags contained 1,746 pounds of marijuana, worth about $6 million dollars, Schreiber said.

"While it is not everyday we discover drugs hidden under cow flop, it does have its own unique sweet smell of success," said Pat Hinchey, an area port director with Customs and Border Protection.

Officers arrested the driver, Edwin R. Fuller, 39, of Langley, B.C., and transported him to the Whatcom County Jail.

He has since been transferred to a federal facility in Seattle to make a preliminary appearance in U.S. District Court.
