Fourteen jail officers for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office have received federal training to determine the immigration status of people who are brought to jails.

They completed a four-week training course and join dozens of other jail Maricopa County jail officers who already have the training.

Sheriff's officials say the training is intended to prevent illegal immigrants who are charged with crimes from being released on the streets

Last year, the sheriff's office was stripped of its special authority to make federal immigration arrests, though it continues to do immigration enforcement under state laws.

But the sheriff's office still retains the federal power that lets jail officers check on people's immigration status.
