LAS CRUCES - A man facing a 10-year sentence for illegally re-entering the country is being sought by police on charges he attacked his estranged wife in front of their children.
Miguel Gonzales, 26, whose last known address is 5825 Dune Drive, in Las Cruces, has been wanted since Dec. 27 and could still be in the Doña Ana County area, according to authorities. Gonzales appeared to be drunk when he is alleged to have showed up at his wife's East Mesa home the night of Dec. 18, according to court documents. The woman told police she and her young son and daughter were asleep when Gonzales woke them and she let him in, according to court documents. Once inside, Gonzales allegedly took the three into a bedroom, confiscated the woman's car keys and phone, and told her he wouldn't leave until he was given money. Gonzales then allegedly slammed the woman's head into the wall, grabbed her hair, pulling a clump from her head, punched the wall and smacked the woman in the face, leaving a visible scratch and swelling to her eyebrow.
During the altercation, Gonzales allegedly refused to let the woman take their children to another room, away from the abuse.
Gonzales, whose criminal history includes charges of sexual assault, resisting arrest and cocaine possession, is in the country illegally and has been deported before, according to the sheriff's office.
His current charges include false imprisonment, battery against a household member and interference with communications.
Gonzales is being sought on a nationwide warrant with a $10,000 cash-only bond issued by Las Cruces Magistrate Court Judge Richard Silva. He is described as being 6 feet tall, weighing 175 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.
Anyone with any information about Gonzales 's whereabouts is asked to call the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department at (575) 526-0795 or Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or via text message to LCTIPS (528477).
