The Outsiders: Undocumented Immigrants
With ski masks covering their faces, immigration officers raided a Grand Island meat packing plant. Dozens of undocumented immigrants were rounded up in the December 2006 enforcement effort, just the kind of thing "Hector" fears.
"It's difficult when you don't have the right documents, sometimes you go to work and feel you're not going to come back home, he said.
For a woman named "Luz", the decision to come to the United States illegally was one she didn't make. Born in Mexico, but raised in Nebraska, she battles the system to become a citizen.
She said, "Everybody thinks it's easy, you go to the DMV and you get them. it's taken me 20 years to try to be legal and it takes a lot of money and we don't even know if we'll become legal or citizens after 20 years in the system."
She graduated from Grand Island Senior High, but for the most part, that's where her education ended.
"If I had been legal at that point I think I would've received scholarships and gone and been a professional already," she explained.
But she's not there yet, because she only takes college courses when she can afford them.
She said, "We learn the language and become professionals and that's our goal, have a better life and be a better person than our parents were."
Luz has aspirations for her son who attends a school where minorities are the majority.
"He's blessed with things than I would ever dream of having in Mexico."
Latino immigrants have found a home in Grand Island, learning English and raising families, to the objection of those who say they should be deported.
"We do want the same things, but other people see you as a problem," Luz said.
She's has no criminal record, has never been on food stamps, and pays taxes. That's why she calls on Washington for reform.
"That's why we need help from the President and the senate to get amnesty."
She said it would be a chance to obtain what's beyond her grasp, but within reach for the generation born here.
She said, "The little kids, they're citizens, they will become professionals, they will see them in this country if they like it or not, that's the future."
For now, she lives in the shadows of Nebraska's "Good Life."
Reporter's Notes by Steve White:
Immigration figures released Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Immigration Statistics show a million fewer undocumented immigrants than a year ago, but it's still a population nearly 11 million strong.
There were 8.5 million in 2000, and consistently between 10 and 11 million since 2005, according to Homeland Security. Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador are the top three sources of unauthorized immigration.

Anyone here illegally should NEVER be given green cards/legalization/path to citizenship or citizenship. People who OBEYED our laws and are waiting in their own countries 10-20 years are entitled, you are not! Please show me the paid healthcare bills for you and your son. I am a nurse, former Captain in the Army Nurse Corp, have never been arrested and never collected food stamps. However, I have paid for your healthcare, your son's healthcare, my healthcare, my family's healthcare, and my children's healthcare. Actually, I have also contributed to my granddaughter's braces because I love her more than anything, but that was the only expense that was my choice.

This women has only her ILLEGAL parents to blame, they knew what they were doing when they broke our laws by entering the United States with their ILLEGAL child! Once the ILLEGALS arrive in the United States with their ILLEGAL "children" they continue their invasion of the United States with the ABUSE of the 14th Amendment to create Anchors and more ILLEGALS for United States Citizens to furnish benefits!
