Ill. congressman fighting anti-immigration bill – in AZ
Illinois congressman fighting anti-immigration bill – in Arizona
by Josh Lederman
April 22, 2010
U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez is fighting an anti-immigration bill he finds unjust and destructive – that’s no surprise. But the bill is in Arizona, and Gutierrez represents Illinois.
In the national debate on immigration reform, Gutierrez, a Chicago Democrat, has long been one of the most vocal politicians, advocating comprehensive reform that both discourages companies from hiring undocumented immigrants and provides a path to legalization. Yet in becoming a central voice against legislation in a state far from his district, he’s triggered the praise of some and the scorn of others.
At issue is a controversial bill passed the Arizona Senate on Monday that would enable police to question anyone they reasonably suspect is in the country illegally, and to charge people with trespassing for being in Arizona without proper documentation.
Critics say the bill invites racial profiling, but proponents say it fills the void the federal government has created by not addressing immigration or enforcing current law.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has until Saturday to sign the bill into law, veto it or do nothing and let it become law without her signature. A spokeswoman for the governor said Thursday that no decision has been made.
In recent weeks Gutierrez has given countless television and print interviews, penned an editorial and released a statement pushing Brewer to veto the bill. It’s a move that raises the question of which government entities should be making and enforcing immigration policy.

And I think that Gutierrez is a socialist that wants to import voters for his own ambitions.

Gutierrez is a La Razan who wants nothing more than the invasion of his "beloved illegals" to take over the Southwest and eventually the U.S. by this massive invasion and will do everything he can do in his power to ensure his "illegal alien invasion" dream comes true

So called members of Congress (Supposed representatives of the American People) undermining the very laws for which they took an oath to uphold. Talk about arrogance and corruption....unbelievable. Benedict Arnolds all....
There is no freedom without the law. Remember our veterans whose sacrifices allow us to live in freedom.

You made a very good point, builditnow. I think Guitierez and his co-conspirators know that they are losing ground in their agenda, and desperately stepping up their efforts. Just look at the protest at the AZ Capital today. They bused in agitators from LA- they somehow organized a massive exodus of high school kids out of the school day to showcase 'support'. If their agenda could in any way stand on it's own merits, would such maneuvers really be necessary?

Added to Homepage with title amended from 'anti-immigration bill' to 'anti-illegal immigration bill.' There is a big difference.

Illegals, Deport Them
Who cares what Gutierrez says. I do not care. This is a country that belongs to US citizens. Gutierrez must be working for US citizens. He must not work for illegal aliens. The US Congress must not allow congressmen/women to work for illegal aliens. JUST DEPORT ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS. I SUPPORT THE BILL (ARIZONA). THE GOV. OF ARIZONA MUST SIGN THE BILL BECAUSE THAT IS THE WILL OF THE VOTERS (US CITIZENS). IF SHE DOES NOT SIGN THE BILL, THAT WILL MEAN THAT SHE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE WILL OF THE VOTERS (ARIZONA).

YES, GUTIERREZ, BARACK OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATS WANT TO LEGALIZE ILLEGAL ALIENS TO GET THIER SOCIALIST AGENDA GOING FORWARD. WE WILL NOT ALLOW THE SOCIALIST TO GO FORWARD. WE HAVE TO STOP GUTIERREZ, BARACK OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRTAS. THIS NOVEMBER LET'S REMOVE THEM FROM OFFICE AND IN 2012 LET'S ELECT ANOTHER PRESIDENT. WE NEED A PRESIDENT WHO WILL REPRESENT US CITIZENS. WE DO NOT WANT A PRESIDENT WHO REPRESENTS ILLEGAL ALIENS. DEPORT ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS.
