Border Patrol nabs 85 illegal immigrants near Douglas

Border Patrol agents arrested a group of 85 illegal immigrants walking in the desert east of Douglas on Thursday, a spokesman said.
They were found about 3 p.m. on the Geronimo Trail, a dirt road and smuggling route that runs from Douglas to the New Mexico border, Agent Mike Scioli said.
The 85 - all men - were abandoned by their guides just before the arrests, he said.
"It was a large-dollar group," Scioli said. "Attempting something like this, they're going to be organized. They're going to have scouts all along the way. The guides will know when we're coming."
Scioli estimated that the smugglers would have been paid about $1,500-$2,000 per person for the trip to Tucson.
Though large, it was not the biggest group the Border Patrol has seen, Scioli said. In the past year, there has been at least one group of about 100.
"Basically this just shows you how brazen they are," Scioli said. "It's pretty remarkable, when you're out there in the desert by yourself and you come across a group like this."
A Border Patrol news release said the men met in Guanajuato, Mexico, and traveled by bus to Agua Prieta, Son., just south of the border at Douglas, arriving on Tuesday. They then crossed the border on foot.
The group was comprised of men from the states of Michoacan, Guanajuato, Aguas Calientes and Tamaulipas, the release said. They planned to spread out across the United States to look for work after the factories they worked in closed.
All 85 returned to Mexico voluntarily, the release said.
