LAS CRUCES — A march and rally in support of amendments to the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, adopted by Congress in 1996, will take place at 5:30 p.m. today.
The march begins at the Pan American Center and ends in the courtyard at New Mexico State University's Health Services building, at the corner of Solano Drive and University. A rally, including several speakers, will start about 6 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the NMSU Committee for a Fair Immigration and Somos Un Pueblo, a nonprofit organization based in Santa Fe that advocates social justice for immigrants.

The amendments would permit states, rather than the federal government, to determine residency for immigrants seeking higher education opportunities. Another proposed amendment to the Immigration and Nationality Act would cancel the removal and adjust the status of certain college-bound immigrant students who are long-term U.S. residents.
