Latino group rallies against immigration bill

FAIRMONT CITY, Ill. Advocate groups for Hispanics in Southern Illinois are rallying against an immigration reform bill in the U-S House.

Legislation sponsored by Republican James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin would for the first time make it a felony for illegal immigrants to live in the United States.

Members of a group called Latino Rountable rallied yesterday in Fairmont City, a heavily Hispanic village in St. Clair County. The group says the bill won't curtail illegal immigration _ it'll just create more anxiety among illegals already living in the U-S.

Supporters say the bill is an important step toward sealing U-S borders.

Southern Illinois' two congressmen _ Democrat Jerry Costello and Republican John Shimkus _ aren't saying how they'll vote on the bill.
