New Round of Illegal Alien Marches Will Only Strengthen Public Opposition to Amnesty

WASHINGTON, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A massive amnesty for millions of illegal aliens, desperately wanted by President Bush and many Congressional leaders of both parties, appears stalled by overwhelming public opposition. The intensity of the public's opposition to rewarding illegal aliens with "a pathway to citizenship" can be traced directly to the street rallies and boycotts that took place earlier this year. The spectacle of millions of people taking to the streets of American cities, marching under foreign lags, while demanding amnesty and other benefits, struck a raw nerve with mainstream America.

Illegal alien advocacy groups are now attempting to jump start the stalled congressional deliberations on an amnesty/guest worker bill with yet other round of marches and public events. On Wednesday, illegal aliens will take to the streets of Chicago, while others take to the halls of Congress in an effort to revive a Senate-passed amnesty bill that the House is refusing to touch.

"Bring 'em on," said retired Col. Al Rodriguez, chairman of You Don't Speak for Me! (YDSFM), a national coalition of American Hispanics who support immigration enforcement. "Nothing has done more to solidify public opinion or turn key Congressional leaders against the idea of amnesty than these brazen and public demonstrations by illegal aliens and their supporters.

"Six months ago, you had the White House, the majority of the Senate, and even key members of the House leadership all backing some form of amnesty legislation. Then the illegal aliens took to the streets with a series of in- your-face marches. As a result, the House leadership has dug in its heels on an enforcement-only bill, and Senate Republicans have taken to calling the Senate amnesty legislation the Reid-Kennedy bill, while Senate Democrats refer to it as the Bush-McCain bill. We expect that more street demonstrations in Chicago and illegal aliens lobbying in Washington will fuel more demands for immigration enforcement from the rest of the American public," predicted Rodriguez.

In response to what is being billed as a "day of advocacy" Wednesday on Capitol Hill by illegal aliens and their backers, YDSFM will be arriving in Washington on Tuesday to meet with legislators and hold a news conference with key congressional backers of immigration enforcement. The news conference will take place Tuesday at 11:00 am in Room 2456 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

"When it comes to the need to secure our nation's borders and enforce our immigration laws, the American public speaks with one voice," said Claudia Spencer, vice chair of YDSFM. "The march planned for Chicago and the lobbying campaign in Washington is designed to create the false impression that with Election Day approaching, Hispanics in the U.S. are uniting behind amnesty for illegal aliens. Quite the contrary, American Hispanics -- the people who obey the law, work hard and pay taxes, and who vote -- are demanding that Congress and the Bush Administration protect our borders, protect American citizens against crime and terrorism, protect our jobs and public resources, and reject amnesty for illegal aliens," concluded Spencer.
