May 31 (Prensa Latina) Annual drug consumption in Mexico averages 500 tons, with drug dealers earning more than 450 million dollars, the federal Public Security Secretariat (SSP) reported.

From December 2006 to May 2009, over 360 tons of marihuana were seized, as well as 7,118 guns and 906,295 bullets, the report pointed out.

In the last year, it added, nearly 50,000 cases of extortion and over 1,000 kidnappings were registered nationwide.

Referring to the anti-organized crime strategy, the SSP said it is intended to delimit the criminal logistics, increase police check posts, strengthen communication with the victims, and boost a rapid response mechanism to arrest criminals.

A UN study revealed that at least 60 percent of the Mexican municipalities are either permeated or controlled by drug trafficking and organized crime.

On Tuesday, federal police agents and soldiers arrested ten mayors, 17 public officials and a first instance judge in Michoacan, for alleged links with those gangs.
