Conservative critics of U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., say they will hammer him on his support of immigration reform when he runs for re-election this year.

Likely Republican Party primary challengers such as Chris Simcox, one of the founders of the Minuteman border watch movement, say they won't let McCain forget he and then-Sen. Barack Obama both supported establishing a legal status pathway for millions living in the United States illegally during the 2008 presidential elections, The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday.

"Illegal immigration certainly will still be a key issue, because now, more than ever, people are going to see the costs to the taxpayers," Simcox told the Republic. "It's about security, it's about rule of law, it's about cost, and it's about jobs, jobs, jobs."

Congress is again getting ready to take a crack at immigration reform.

The newspaper said McCain has so far has kept his distance from a new bill, saying it must include a guest-worker plan for temporary residency in boom times.

He told the Republic his main border concern has shifted to the threat posed to the Mexican government by drug cartels.
