llegal alien gets 10 years in DUI manslaughter of karate instructor

A man who drove head-on into another car and killed a Jacksonville karate instructor was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison.

Marliano Alberto, 28, accepted that sentence as part of a plea bargain earlier this month. But about 60 relatives and friends of the crash victim, Russell De Ocampo Nevado, 27, filled one side of the courtroom anyway to witness the sentencing.

Several told Circuit Judge L. Page Haddock about the void left in their lives after Nevado was fatally injured April 29 in a wreck on A.C. Skinner Parkway near Southside Boulevard.

"It felt as if my chest had been stabbed many times and someone had ripped the heart out of my chest," Marilyn Nevado, the victim's mother, said as she recalled a detective showing her son's driver's license and telling her there had been a wreck. Nevado was a black belt and instructor, and several students attended the sentencing in martial arts garb.

Police concluded Alberto was driving about 70 mph on a 45-mph road and drove across a median when the road turned. Blood-alcohol tests showed a .09 percent level, slightly above Florida's standard for drunk driving.

Alberto is an illegal alien and federal immigration officials have arranged for him to be held for deportation after his sentence, said Assistant State Attorney Mark Borello. He wasn't sure of Alberto's home country.
