A downtown Atlanta march to protest recent crackdowns against illegal immigrants in Georgia has been postponed to Oct. 7, organizers said.

Demonstrators had planned to march Saturday but decided not to after police said a Braves game and other events would strain the traffic flow on downtown streets, said Teodoro Maus, a former Mexican consul general in Atlanta.

The revised scheduled has protesters gathering at the Georgia Capitol at 1 p.m. They'll begin marching around 2 p.m., travel past Turner Field and return to the Capitol an hour later, said Adelina Nicholls, president of the
Coordinating Council of Latino Community Leaders. Speeches will follow, she said.

Maus said he expects about 5,000 participants.

Latino and immigrant advocates say they want comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level. But the protesters are upset about state efforts — including a sweeping immigration reform law passed earlier this year — that they say have increased fear among immigrant families and the likelihood of racial profiling.

Gov. Sonny Perdue this month announced a task force to curb false IDs used by illegal immigrants. And two recent federal raids have netted more than 150 illegal immigrants in Emanuel and Forsyth counties.
