Calderon Blasts Border Patrol Following The Death Of A Mexican Migrant
June 11, 2010
by Personal Liberty News Desk
Mexican President Felipe Calderon said on Monday that the death of an illegal immigrant who was in the custody of United States Customs and Border Protection agents is an "unacceptable violation" of human rights.
Anastasio Hernandez, a 42-year-old migrant worker who resided in San Diego for years, allegedly resisted arrest last week when immigration officers attempted to deport him following an illegal border crossing. Local authorities said that force needed to be used to restrain Hernandez after he became combative, according to CNN.
"One of the agents used a baton to administer to the subject to get him to stop fighting," said San Diego homicide Captain Jim Collins. "When that was not successful, they used the Taser."
Hernandez died three days later after doctors disconnected him from life support. His death was ruled a homicide, although acute methamphetamine intoxication and hypertension were said to be contributing factors.
Calderon also reiterated his condemnation for Arizona’s new immigration law, which he said "opens a Pandora’s Box of the worst abuses in the history of humanity."
During a visit to Washington in May, Mexico’s president urged lawmakers to pass Federal immigration reform to stop the flow of illegal weapons across the border, the Agence France Presse reports.
