Red Cross Adopts Security Plan due to Violence

The Mexican Red Cross has adopted the plan used internationally in conflict situations. The Secure Access System allows rescuers to only enter a scene once it is secure, with no further risk (Note: same protocol followed by U.S. medics.) expected. The Director said that the Red Cross does not check if the victim is on the side of good, bad, or a bystander. He emphasized that the Red Cross uniform is very visible and makes the rescuers/paramedics more secure so they can’t be mistaken for police. The Red Cross has 29,000 volunteers who are not exempt from being victims themselves. Last year a 20 year old volunteer was killed when a gunman opened fire in a hospital, as he tried to kill a patient. Although 90% of donations are anonymous, the
Director said that obviously if they know it is coming from organized crime, it would not be accepted.
