SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A guilty plea is expected Thursday from the mother of a 14-year-old boy suspected of working as an assassin for a Mexican drug cartel.
Yolanda Jimenez Lugo, 43, is accused of being in the United States illegally.
U.S. Border Patrol personnel arrested Lugo at her apartment on South 31st Street in Logan Heights in early December. She was arrested along with her husband, 46-year-old Gabriel Aguirre Manuel.
He is also expected to plead guilty Thursday to the same charge.
Lugo had been deported in September 1997. According to a court document filed shortly after her arrest, Lugo admitted she lacked documentation for living in the United States.
Lugo's teenage son, Edgar Jimenez Lugo, was arrested Dec. 2 in Mexico on suspicion of killing drug gang rivals - allegedly beheading some of them - as part of his alleged work for the South Pacific drug-trafficking cartel.
The teen was captured at an airport in Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos state, as he and one of his older sisters were about to board a flight to Tijuana, from where they intended to cross into the United States to be with their mother in San Diego, according to news accounts.
The boy and his 19-year-old sister, Elizabeth Jimenez Lugo, allegedly worked for Julio "El Negro" Padilla, who has been trying to seize control of the illicit drug market in Morelos through violence, authorities have said.

Mom of teen assassin suspect admits being in U.S. illegally

SAN DIEGO — The mother of a 14-year-old San Diego-born native accused of being an assassin for a Mexican drug cartel pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to being in the United States illegally after a previous deportation.
Yolanda Jimenez Lugo, 43, is expected to serve prison time before being deported to Mexico because of a 1997 felony drug conviction.
Jack Boltax, Jimenez’s lawyer, said she likely will be sentenced to 18 to 24 months in prison, but he is trying to get her a lighter sentence.
Jimenez and her husband, Gabriel Aguirre Manuel, 46, were detained Dec. 6 by U.S. Border Patrol agents in front of their apartment in San Diego’s Logan Heights neighborhood. The arrest came four days after Mexican soldiers captured Jimenez’s son, Edgar Jimenez Lugo, a child from a previous relationship, as he prepared to board a flight from central Mexico to Tijuana.
Aguirre has pleaded not guilty to re-entering the United States after a previous deportation. He is likely to change his plea at a federal court hearing next week and be deported.
Border Patrol officials said they sought out Jimenez after Edgar’s arrest on allegations of homicide, illegal weapons possession, drug possession and participation in organized crime. The boy confessed to participating in the beheadings of at least four gang rivals and is being held in an undisclosed location in central Mexico.
Edgar was arrested with an older sister as they attempted to get on a plane near Cuernavaca, south of Mexico City, with plans to be reunited with their mother in San Diego. Another sister, who drove the pair to the airport, also was arrested. All three remain in custody in Mexico as their cases are investigated.
Jimenez’s two daughters with Aguirre are U.S. citizens. A relative in San Diego is taking care of the girls, ages 9 and 10.
