Colorado lawmakers killed a watered-down immigration proposal that would have forced bail bond agents to forfeit bonds when a client is deported.

Sponsors of the legislation scaled back several provisions of the bill but it still attracted opposition from the bail industry and immigrant advocates. House Bill 1088 was postponed indefinitely Monday by a Senate committee.

The bill initially would have required law enforcement to notify prosecutors when they suspect someone in their custody is in their country illegally. That provision was deleted and all that remained was a crackdown on bail bond agents who provide bail to illegal immigrants.

Law enforcement would notify bail businesses when they suspected someone was in the country illegally and the bond agents would have to agree to forfeit their money if a person was deported.
