UN rights expert probes US treatment of illegals!

U.N. rights expert to probe U.S. treatment of illegal immigrants
By ELIANE ENGELER, Associated Press Writer

    Friday, April 27, 2007

    (04-27) 11:36 PDT GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) --

A United Nations human rights expert will head to the United States later this month to investigate a highly criticized Texas center for detained immigrant families and two border areas where U.S. officials have announced they would crack down on Mexicans illegally crossing the border, a U.N. official said Friday.

Jorge Bustamante, the Human Rights Council's independent expert on migrant rights, will "witness first hand the situation of migrants at the borders and in immigration detention facilities," said Yvon Edoumou, a spokesman for the U.N. human rights office in Geneva.

The U.S. government is facilitating the visit, which will take place from April 30 to May 18, Edoumou said.

Bustamante, a Mexican, will examine the U.S.-Mexican border in San Diego, California and Nogales, Arizona — two of seven places where U.S. immigration officials announced earlier this week that they would fill in illegal cross-border tunnels to keep smugglers from reopening them.

Bustamante will also discuss migrant issues with American government officials, campaign groups and immigrants during the mission that includes stops in Tucson, Ariz.; Austin, Texas; Fort Myers, Fla.; New York; and Washington D.C.

He also will visit the T. Don Hutto facility — a former prison in Taylor, Texas — that typically houses about 400 non-criminal immigrants awaiting deportation or other outcomes to their immigration cases.

Earlier this month a U.S. district judge said living conditions seemed "questionable" at the facility. Civil liberties and immigration advocates contend families at Hutto are subjected to psychologically abusive guards, inadequate medical care and inhumane conditions and that the facility is run like a prison. They sued federal officials in March on behalf of several children detained at the center.

Bustamante's findings will be presented to the 47-nation rights council at its next session in June.

I suppose we could put them all up at the Waldorf Astoria

They are being held in these units because they are families. If they were single people they would be being deported and not held over for hearings. How much do we really owe these people who are criminals?

Put the kids in foster care then and send the parents right out of the country. Let the foster care place the children. Would that be more humane? We are the most humane country in the world and many times to our own detriment. Would the Mexican government be this human to Americans who are in their country illegally? And come to think of it, do they even have an anchor baby policy?

And I am sorry but putting a Mexican from the UN in charge of this situation is just going to encourage a biased report. How about just once we demand to stand an equal change of some sort and make them send someone who is neither American or Mexican and might have some kind of objectivity.

Or even better, the UN can go to hell and stay out of our business. They aren't concerned about the human rights of Americans being slaughtered in the streets by gangs and drunk drivers. They aren't concerned about the ethnic cleansing going on in LA by the Mexican gangs to the Black Americans trying to survive there. They aren't investigating the plight of the American worker.

We are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
And personally I am sick to death of it.
God what I wouldn't give for a President with some (@@$$%) who would stand up for us and demand OUR rights.....

Have the UN focus on Mexico's treatment of 'immigrants' of undocumented status.

Since when did we become the whipping boy of the world.

Jorge Bustamante, the Human Rights Council's independent expert

    Bustamante, a Mexican,

Bustamante will also discuss migrant issues with American government officials, campaign groups and immigrants

Butt out of US domestic affairs - as so many other countries say, "it's an internal matter" - let us deal with it.

Why has the UN and/or Mr. Bustamante, chosen to focus on US/Mexican immigration, and not on other areas where even MORE people are involved and/or under even MORE dire circumstances - as in: Iraq-Syria/Turkey, Sudan-Chad, Ethiopia-Somalia, etc?
The emphasis is misplaced and reeks of an ulterior agenda (IMHO)

What a surpise - a Mexican from the UN is going to investigate the problems with Mexico creating sush devastating poverty in Mexico that their people have to come here to get something to eat, and leave a trail of trash along the way. Then when they get here they immediately go for every hand-out they can take/get from the elected public servants at the tax payers expense. How impartial.

The UN is unable to solve any problems in the Sudan or any where else.
They have an ineffecive policy which is don't shoot until you get fired on first. In the mean time they are known to rape and pillage the people they are there to protect. How honerable.

Anyone read the book: The Beast - on the East River by Nathan Tabor.

The UN is such a joke and what's this with our government "facilitating" the process. You are exactly correct: why are they not investigating the Mexican government and the oligarchies that are keeping Mexico a third world disaster? That's where the real abuse is taking place.
