WILKES-BARRE – Police say the city’s new surveillance camera system led to a drug arrest on Friday afternoon.

Wilkes-Barre police arrest Leonard Sampson, 50, on drug-related charges Friday on Public Square. An officer monitoring the city’s surveillance cameras spotted drug sales taking place, police said. Sampson is reportedly an illegal immigrant.

Leonard Sampson, 50, an illegal immigrant from Guyana, was arrested after narcotics officers responded to a report of several men dealing drugs on downtown’s Public Square, police said.

Officer Benedict Victor was monitoring the Hawkeye camera system, which captured the illegal activity, police said in a news release.

The suspect, who was captured on the camera system, was described as wearing a yellow shirt and walking onto North Main Street just off of Public Square.

Police said they recognized Sampson from a prior drug arrest in 2007.

Sampson was uncooperative with officers and kept trying to reach into his waistband, which contained cocaine packaged for resale, police said. He then provided a false name to police.
