2 men found shot to death in Pinal County

    June 7, 2010 1:12 pm

MARICOPA, Ariz. — The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of two bodies found in a desert area south of Maricopa. Both men had been shot.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Lt. Tamitha Villar said Monday the sheriff’s office received a 911 cell phone call from one of the victims Sunday night.

Deputies responded and found the men’s bodies at the remnants of a migrant camp about two and a-half miles south of Interstate 8 near Antelope Peak.

Villar said deputies found the first shooting victim through GPS. The second victim was found nearby.

Villar said the men were not carrying identification. It’s also not clear if the victims knew the shooter

2 Found Shot Dead Near Illegal Border Crossing in Arizona

Arizona authorities reportedly found two bodies near a common border crossing Sunday, not far from where a police deputy was shot last April

Arizona authorities found two bodies near a common illegal border crossing Sunday, not far from where a deputy was shot last April, MyFoxPhoenix.com reports.

Emergency dispatchers in Pinal County reportedly received a 911 call Sunday night from a man saying he and his friend had been shot before the cell phone signal was lost.

Officials later found the bodies and two weapons, described as a long gun and handgun, according to the station.

Police said it's not clear whether the victims were illegal immigrants -- adding that the pair had tattoos indicating that they were from the area.

The location where the murders occurred is a well-known smuggling corridor for drugs and illegal immigrants headed from Mexico to Phoenix and the U.S. interior. It is also near where Pinal County Deputy Louie Puroll, 53, was shot and wounded April 30 allegedly by drug smugglers.

Two men killed in smuggling corridor

    by Jana Baybado/KTAR (June 7th, 2010 @ 11:13am)

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Two men have been found shot to death in the desert near Interstate 8 and State Route 84, a popular route for drug smugglers and human smugglers traveling from the Arizona-Mexico border to the Valley.

Pinal County Sheriff's Lt. Tamatha Villar said the bodies were found after the sheriff's office received a 911 call from a man about 8 o'clock Sunday night. She said the man "advised us he was in the desert area near Interstate 8 and mile marker 160. He advised us that he and a friend had been shot and that they needed help. Our communications center lost the signal with them."

The shooting was in the same area where Pinal County Deputy Louie Puroll was shot April 30 while tracking a bunch of drug smugglers. He survived. Four possible suspects were arrested.

Villar said investigators had "very, very limited information" about the latest shooting on Monday.

"The scope of the crime scene is enormous," she said. "It's desert, vast desert, obviously a volatile area so our units have to be extremely cautious as they proceed through their investigation."

No information about the victims was released. Mile marker 160 on I-8 is about 18 miles west of Casa Grande.

Pinal County Officials found two dead bodies in the desert off I-8 and milepost 150. Not far from where a deputy was shot in April.

Dispatch received a 911 call from a man Sunday night stating that he and a friend had been shot. Then the cell phone signal was lost.

Officials later found the bodies and two weapons, described as a long gun and handgun.

Detectives say it appears the area where the bodies were found may be some sort of migrant camp.

The victims had tattoos indicating that they're from the area. At this point, it's unknown if they are undocumented or Hispanic, but they don't appear to be illegal immigrants.
